The driver of the garbage truck was also injured in the crash, and taken to the hospital but the driver’s status is not known.
Sarasota police reported that the accident occurred at the intersection of Tuttle and Ringling when the driver of the school bus who was apparently using a mobile phone at the time of the collision, failed to stop in time to avoid hitting the garbage truck. The school bus smashed into the rear of the Garbage truck after a traffic signal change.
After the collision the hurt students were grouped together by police and first responders including the Sarasota County fire department checked each student’s injuries. The students parents where contacted and came to the scene of the accident to pick up their children.
The uninjured children where put back onto the school bus an continued to their original destination of the Boys and Girls Club.
Before departing the school bus was looked over by a qualified mechanic. Apparently the bus only sustained minor damage to the radiator.
