North Port Police reported a fatal accident early morning on South Tamiami Trail at North Port Blvd.
The accident happened at roughly six in the morning as a man identified only as a homeless, forty-eight year old male was riding a bicycle south on Tamiami trail in the early morning darkness with no lights. The man was struck by a tractor-trailer driving down the south lanes.
The truck driver stopped phoned the authorities and attempted CPR on the injured cyclist. However the victim died from his injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police in St. Pete Beach reported a crash with injuries between a bicyclist and an SUV.
The crash took place at approximately 8:30 p.m. as fifty four year old cyclist Anthony Logothetis attempted to cross Gulf Blvd., near the intersection with 65th Avenue. As Logothetis crossed Gulf Boulevard he was struck by a Subaru Outback driven by 47 year old Emanual D. Matalon.
Both driver Emanual Matalon and his passenger 40 year old Shannon were unharmed in the crash however cyclist Anthony Logothetis sustained life-threatening injuries and was taken to Bayfront Health St. Petersburg for medical attention.
Logothetis was not in a crosswalk and his bicycle was not equipped with lights.
FHP stated a woman from Bradenton was critically injured after being involved in a traffic accident in DeSoto County.
The accident happened as twenty-nine year old Bradenton woman Jennifer Suggs was cycling northbound just south of SW Angus street on SW Shores avenue on a bicycle not equipped with lights.
At the same time a Ford Van driven by twenty-two year old Joe Palafox from Arcadia was also driving north on SW Shores when an oncoming vehicles headlines obstructed Palafox’s vision monetarily.
The Ford Van collided with Suggs from behind critically injuring her. Suggs was flown Bayfront Medical Center in St. Petersburg for emergency medial treatment.
A man from Port Charlotte is in critical condition after being struck by a school bus.
FHP stated that the crash happened as eighty three year old cyclist George Heinrich rode his bicycle north along U.S. 41 and attempted to cross Murdock Circle outside of a crosswalk and in an unmarked are of the road from a parking lot.
At the same time, sixty year old bus driver Jean Corvil from Port Charlotte was driving east on Murdock Circle approaching U.S. 41. with more than thirty students as on board.
The bus grazed to left handlebar of Heinrich’s bicycle causing him to be thrown onto the roadway. The force of the impact combined with the fact that Heinrich was not wearing a helmet resulted in the cyclist being critically injured.
Heinrich was taken to an area hospital for emergency medical treatment.
Bradenton Police reported a deadly crash between a bicyclist and a car early Wednesday morning.
The crash took place when cyclist 44 year old Timon J. Morales of Bradenton Beach, was riding near Manatee Avenue West. At roughly quarter till four in the morning, Morales attempted to cross Manatee Ave. at the 12000 block and road directly into the path on an oncoming car.
While the driver of the car has not yet been identified, the vehicle was described as a Hyundai Elantra that was driving east at the time of the accident. Morales was declared dead at the scene of the accident, and the driver of the car that hit him sustained minor injures during the crash. The driver received treatment from Blake Medical Center before being released. As police have stated because Morales was at fault in the deadly crash no charges have been filed on the driver.
The report from Florida Highway Patrol stated that a Dodge Ram pickup truck crashed into a motorized bicycle on Tamiami Trail in port Charlotte.
The crash took place as the twenty five year old Andrew Toner from Port Charlotte was trying to cross Tamiami Trail near Elkcam Blvd. At the same time fourty nine year old Anthony Maiello, also from Port Charlotte, was heading south on Tamiami Trail in his Ram pickup truck.
Toner road into the path of the oncoming Dodge Ram, Maiello attempted to avoid a crash but there was not enough time to stop. The force of the crash resulted in Toner sustaining critical injuries and he was taken by helicopter to Lee Memorial Hospital for emergency medical treatment.
Toner was not wearing a helmet during the accident. Traffic was stopped for roughly 60 minutes while crews and police responded to the crash.
Sarasota hit-and-run on Ringling Causeway Injures Cyclists
A hit-and-run crash between a bicyclist and a driver was reported by Sarasota Police.
The crash took place at roughly 10 in the morning as two cyclists, husband and wife, rode along the Ringling Causeway. As they were just west of Bird Key Park heading towards St. Armands Circle the wife was hit by a vehicle.
Witnesses described the vehicle as a Chrysler 300 painted light blue. The driver of the Chrysler was said to be an elderly woman of caucasian descent.
The cyclist suffered serious but non-life threatening injuries as a result of the crash.
The force of the collision resulted in the Chrysler being dented in and having a ruptured tire, while the driver of the car fled the scene, she was later located by authorities and is facing changes of leaving the scene of an accident with injuries.
Sarasota police are further investigating the crash.
A crash between a hit-and-run driver and a bicyclist in Bradenton resulted in the death of the bicyclist and police looking for the driver of the vehicle.
Forty five year old Anthony Galanopoulos was riding his bike southbound on the shoulder of 15th Street East in the early hours of Friday when a vehicle pulled off the road onto the shoulder behind him.
After crashing into Galanopoulos on the shoulder, the driver fled the area. Galanopoulos was pronounced dead at the scene and authorities are looking for anyone with knowledge of the incident.
The vehicle was described as possibly a Ford F-150 pickup truck with damage to the right front headlight.
Anyone who knows of the crash should call Florida Highway Patrol at (239) 938-1800 to aid in the investigation.
North Port police is investigating an apparent car vs bicycle crash that took the life of a 20 year old male Monday.
The fatal crash took place at roughly 9p.m. when 20 year-old cyclist Alonzo Cota-Alvarado was attempting to cross Tamiami trail near South Biscayne Drive when he was hit by a car.
The driver, 30 year old Shane Michael Kennedy, was heading north in a Chevy Impala sedan when he encountered Cota-Alvarado. Kennedy did not see the Bicyclist untill it was too late to avoid a collision.
Alonzo Cota-Alvarado was struck at speed, mortally wounding him. Cota-Alvarado was taken to Tampa General Hospital where he died from his injuries.
North Port Police are continuing to investigate the accident.
Florida Highway Patrol reported a fatal accident between a car and a Bicyclist Saturday night.
The crash took place around 6:50 p.m. when driver Jimmie Minnell a 55 year old from Sarasota, turned off University Parkway onto Lockwood Ridge Road and crashed into a bicyclist that had been riding westbound in the bike lane.
The rider, Jackie Winford 60 from, Sarasota, was mortally wounded as a result of the collision, and died from his injuries at Lakewood Ranch Medical Center.
Minnell will be charged with violating right of way.
