North Port Police Department reported a deadly motorcycle accident Monday just outside Woodland Middle School.
The crash took place as four motorcyclists were riding in the northbound lanes of Panacea boulevard. Shortly after the group passed the school zone in front of Woodland Middle School, two of the motorcycles collided.
Twenty year old Xavier Alonso was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash. Twenty Three year old Hector Sanchez was also inured in the crash and taken to a local hospital for treatment.
No further details are available at this time.
North Port Police are asking anyone who may have witnessed the crash to contact Officer Aaron Nick at 941-429-7300.
Florida Highway Patrol reported a hit and run collision between a scooter and a full-sized Ford SUV.
The crash took place as a twenty-nine year old male was riding south on U.S. 41 at roughly 10:30p.m.
North of the intersection of River Road and 41 the motor scooter was struck from behind by a driver in a Ford Expedition SUV.
The force of the impact threw the rider from his motor scooter onto the shoulder of U.S. 41. The impact seriously injured the downed rider.
The crash sandwiched the scooter under the SUV, where it became lodged and dragged down the road for more than 1,000 feet. Witnesses said the SUV came to a stop and the drive got out, pulled the smashed scooter from under the vehicle and then proceeded to flee the scene.
The helmetless injured scooter rider was brought to Sarasota memorial for treatment of serious injuries. Authorities are seeking information about the driver of the SUV and have asked anyone with knowledge to contact them at 941-751-8350.
North Port police is investigating an apparent car vs bicycle crash that took the life of a 20 year old male Monday.
The fatal crash took place at roughly 9p.m. when 20 year-old cyclist Alonzo Cota-Alvarado was attempting to cross Tamiami trail near South Biscayne Drive when he was hit by a car.
The driver, 30 year old Shane Michael Kennedy, was heading north in a Chevy Impala sedan when he encountered Cota-Alvarado. Kennedy did not see the Bicyclist untill it was too late to avoid a collision.
Alonzo Cota-Alvarado was struck at speed, mortally wounding him. Cota-Alvarado was taken to Tampa General Hospital where he died from his injuries.
North Port Police are continuing to investigate the accident.
A serious crash between a tractor-trailer and small car resulted in the north bound lanes of I-75 being closed for 2 hours while FHP troopers investigated the crash and cleared the wreckage.
The crash made the tractor-trailer in-operable blocking the lanes.
FHP has not released the identities of those involved or whether there have been inuries in the crash.
North Port Police Reported a motorcycle accident in North Port that resulted in the rider being air lifted for emergency medical treatment.
The crash happened at the intersection of Sumter Crossing Drive and Tamiami Trail in North Port just prior to 10 a.m.
Motorcyclist Ronald Applegarth a 52-year old was attempting to change lanes when he lost control of his Harley-Davidson. The motorcycle went down and continued to skid on it’s side for more than 300 feet on the roadway.
Applegarth sustained serious injuries and was flown to Blake Medical Center in Bradenton for treatment of his injuries. North Port Police are still investigating the crash.
North Port Police reported an early morning single car accident that resulted in a man being thrown from an overturned car.
The accident occurred at roughly 2:15a.m. when 43 year old Alexander Picciani drove north on Cranberry Boulevard. As Picciani entered a sweeping curve in the road near the intersection with Lemay Lane he failed to negotiate the turn.
Picciani lost control of the vehicle which slid across the the road through the southbound lane and ran off the road. The vehicle continued to speed off the road, smashing a mailbox and then launching off the embankment of a culvert into the air, where it over turned throwing Picciani from the vehicle.
Picciani was take by first responders to Blake Medical Center in Bradenton for treatment of serious injuries.
Police stated the accident is still under investigation.
A motorcyclist crashed into a Humvee Tuesday afternoon. The accident happened when the driver of the Hummer, Holly Haynes, a 44 year old from Placida, was driving south on Tamiami Trail towards Biscayne Drive when she abruptly slowed to turn into the Shell Gas Station.
The motorcyclist, Michael Lee Murphy a 61 year old from North Port was following Haynes when she abruptly slowed to turn into the gas station. Murphy braked hard to avoid crashing into the SUV but skidded more than 50 feet before slamming into the back of the Hummer.
After impacting with the Hummer, Murphy was thrown onto the roadway where he slid on the asphalt before coming to a stop.
Offices stated that Murphy was not wearing a helmet at the time of the accident and suffered serious head injuries from the crash.
