Traffic Accident With Fatality Closes US 41 In Punta Gorda

Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office reported an accident that resulted in a death in Punta Gorda.

The crash took place close to Pine Trail Road on the southbound lanes of U.S. 41 early morning. Southbound lanes were blocked for several hours untill crews had cleared the wreckage at 10:am.

The identities of those involved and further details of the crash have not yet been released.

Punta Gorda Car Crash Kills One

Florida Highway Patrol Reported an elderly woman died as a result of injuries sustained in a car crash Wednesday morning.

The accident happened when 89-year old Lilian Stainaker was attempting to back out of the driveway of a home close to the intersection of Sugarwood Street and Pine Needle Dr. at roughly 5:15 in the afternoon.

Stainaker accidentally accelerated too hard and speed the 2008 Ford Fusion sedan across Sugarwood Street and crashed into a mobile home.

Stainaker was taken to Lee Memorial Hospital where she died of her injuries. No charges were filed and FHP has not indicated whether Stainaker was wearing a sea belt.

Punta Gorda Man Dies From Motorcycle Accident

A motorcyclist from Punta Gorda died Monday from injuries sustained during a crash in Charlotte county that occurred Sunday.

Florida Highway Patrol reported the accident took place when Paul Ruleford  was riding his Suzuki motorcycle on Bryan Way heading towards  U.S. 17 with a young rider on another motorcycle. At around quarter to 6p.m. the young rider turned and headed off the road.

Ruleford followed but lost control of his motorcycle and was thrown from the bike at speed onto the roadway.

Ruleford, not wearing his helmet at the time of the accident, suffer severe injuries and was taken to Lee Memorial Hospital for treatment.

Monday afternoon, Ruleford died from his injuries while under care at Lee Memorial

Fatal Bicycle Vs Truck Accident In Punta Gorda

Punta Gorda officials announced an accident involving a bicyclist and a pick up truck that occurred Tuesday Morning was fatal.

The crash happened early morning on U.S. 41 at St. Pierre Road when Angle Hoyt a 24 year old from Port Charlotte was riding a bicycle north on 41. Hoyt apparently attempted to turn left onto St. Pierre Road but rode directly into the side of an oncoming pick up truck in the southbound lanes.

The force of the collision threw Hoyt from her bicycle onto the roadway where authorities later pronounced her dead. FHP also stated that Hoyt had not been wearing a helmet during the crash and that an investigation of the accident was underway.

Auto Accident In Punta Gorda Kills One

Florida Highway Patrol reported an serious car crash early Tuesday morning that has claimed at least one life.

Troopers stated that the accident occurred at roughly 6:15 in the morning at the intersection of St. Pierre Road and Tamiami Trail in Punta Gorda Florida.

FHP has not yet released full details of the accident but the wreckage from the crash has blocked the southbound lanes of Tamiami Trail. First responders had routed traffic to St. Pierre Road as a detour while the accident was investigated and the wreckage cleared from U.S. 41.

Punta Gorda Motorcycle Accident Seriously Hurts Port Charlotte Man

A motorcycle vs. Jeep accident in Punta Gorda leaves Port Charlotte man seriously hurt.

Florida Highway Patrol reported Thursday that at 12:30 JImmy Josyln a seventy one year old from Port Charlotte was riding his Harley-Davidson aproaching the intersection of Shreve Street and Olympia Avenue when he collided with a Jeep Wrangler.

The Jeep was driven by Nanette Leonard a sixty three year old from Punta Gorda. The collision seriously injured Josyln and he was flown to Tampa General for treatment. Leonard was uninjured in the crash, however police are currently investigating the reason for the crash.

Pickup Rollover Injures 3 Punta Gorda Teens

One teen was critically injured and three others were seriously injured when the pickup truck they were riding in overturned.

Police reported the accident occurred shortly before 2 p.m when Tyler Hartly, the driver of a 2004 Ford Ranger for reasons unknown lost control of the vehicle on Grove, just north of Polk Dr. and swirved off the road causing the pick up truck to rollover several times.

Passenger Sixteen year old Phelisha Doggett  was critically injured and rushed to Charlotte Regional Medical center for treatment.

Tyler Allen a ninteen-year old from Punta Gorda was also injured and taken to Peace River hospital for treatment

Florida Highway Patrol said Doggett was wearing a seat belt at the time of the accident though the other teens were not. Alcohol was ruled NOT a factor in the crash.


Doggett was wearing a seatbelt while the other two were not, troopers reported. Alcohol was ruled out as a contributing factor.

Motorcyclist Accident Seriously Injurs Two In Punta Gorda

Florida Highway Patrol reported a motorcycle accident Saturday afternoon in Punta Gorda has resulted in the rider and a passenger being seriously injured

FHP officers said the accident occurred when the motorcyclist, Jon Baker, 41, of Punta Gorda, was heading east on Peace River Street and overturned his motorcycle after losing control of the bike  from sliding into the shoulder.

The passenger, Nancy Anderson, 49, of Cape Coral,suffered serious injuries and was taken by paramedics to to Fawcett Memorial Hospital. Jon Baker was taken to Tampa General Hospital for emergency medical treatment.

FHP also said that Baker was cited for careless driving.

Port Charlotte Man Dies and Two Passengers Injured On I-275 Crash

Florida Highway Patrol reported a fatal accident with injuries on I-275 in Manatee county. The accident occurred early morning around 5:30 am when the driver (James Boyer, 79 of Port Charlotte) collapsed or went unconscious while driving.

Out of control, the car crossed the highway and collided with a barrier wall, then crossed the highway again to crash into the opposite barrier and finally come to a stop.

The two passengers, a 75-year-old male from Punta Gorda suffered minor injuries and  a 98-year-old female passenger also from Punta Gorda was injured seriously. Both passengers were taken to Manatee Memorial Hospital. Everyone in the car was wearing seat belts and there was no other vehicles in the crash.


Fall From Car Kills Punta Gorda Man

A bizarre, early , morning car accident kills a Punta Gorda man.

Florida Highway Patrol reports the accident occurred at nearly 3:00 am when Charles Moore, 25, of Punta Gorda turned right onto Taralane Drive and the left tires of the vehicle came off the road, The passenger, Jeremiah Backus of Punta Gorda fell out of the side door onto the street and was hit by the right rear tire severely injuring him.

Backus was taken to Charlotte Regional Medical Center where he died of his injuries.

FHP is still investigating the accident.
