A Florida Highway Patrol report announced a single car crash near Osprey FL on state road 681.
The report states that at nearly seven thirty a.m. seventy year old Gregory Vahle was northbound on state road 681 heading from Nokomis toward the I-75 interchange in an Audi A5 sedan.
For reasons unknown Vahle turned suddenly to the right then over-corrected turning back toward the left causing the car to veer out of control as Vahle approached the intersection with En Theos lane.
The Audi sedan still traveling at speed, drove off the road and collided with a traffic light then crashed into a control box coming to a stop.
Officials from the FHP have stated the crash is still being investigated and have asked anyone with knowledge of the crash to contact them at 1-239-938-1800.
Dangerous River Road in Venice Florida has tragically lived up to it’s reputation. Florida Highway Patrol reported a 3 car crash on River Road that resulted in the deaths three people from Venice.
The crash took place at roughly 8:25p.m. as forty-two year old Joseph Clark of Venice was heading southbound in a 1989 Chevy Van following a Hyundai Sante Fe.
Clark attempted to pass the SUV while both vehicles drove on a curved section of the road that was a no-passing section just north of the intersection with Winchester Blvd.
At the same time eighty-four year old Donald Case of Venice was driving his Chrysler Town and Country northbound from the opposite direction also in the same curved section of River Road.
The two vehicles collided head on violently. The force of the impact spun Clark’s full-sized van around causing it to slam into the Hyundai SUV and rolled over upside down.
Clark, the driver of the van, was pronounced dead at he scene by first responders.
Both Donald Case, and a passenger in the Chrysler mini-van, ninety-one year old Ada Cerrito were also killed as a result of the head-on collision. In addition to Case and Cerrito, two other passengers in the Chrysler van, seventy-three year old Constance Burrell of Venice, and seventy-five year old Wayne Burrell also of Venice were transported to Venice Regional Bayfront with serious injuries.
A semi-truck crash in I-75 near River Road in Venice delayed traffic and drew a citation for the driver of the Tractor-Trailer.
The crash happened as Tampa truck driver, 37 year-old Jerome Graddic was in the left lanes driving southbound in a Ford commercial truck past the River Road exit. As Graddic headed down he left lane in a construction zone, a nearby vehicle in the right began to hydroplane and slide toward the Truck.
To avoid a direct crash with the hydroplaning vehicle, Graddic swerved sharply toward the center median, then turned sharply to the right to keep from heading directly into the construction zone. As a result the trailer became unhitched and overturned blocking the roadway. Crews worked to clear the blockage for nearly three hours after the accident.
Graddic suffered minor injuries during the crash and was charged by Police with careless driving and driving with an expired commercial license.
Graddic was transported to Venice regional hospital for treatment of minor injuries.
Florida Highway Patrol announced a fatal motorcycle crash on US 41 in Venice.
The accident took place as thirty nine year old motorcyclist Adrian Morales was riding south in the left lane on his Yamaha Vortex motorcycle.
At the same time, ninety year old Milton Hamois driving in the northbound lanes, entered a turn lane at the intersection of US 41 and Seaboard in his Toyota Camry.
Hamois attempted to make a left turn across 41 into the westbound Seaboard and drove directly into the path of the oncoming motorcyclist.
Morales had no time to react and collided with the Camry. Morales was taken to Venice Memorial Hospital where he died from his injuries. Morales was wearing a helmet during the crash.
Hamois sustained minor injuries during the crash and has been charged for violating right of way.
Florida Highway patrol announced a crash with injuries in Venice at Center Road and U.S 41.
The accident took place as 97-year old Earl Eugene Ephlin was driving on U.S. 41 in his 2012 Lexus approaching the intersection with Center road heading south in the southbound lanes.
At the same time 50 year old Brian Denning from Venice was driving north in a Toyota Camry, heading the wrong way in the southbound lanes, approaching the same intersection as Ephlin.
The two vehicles collided in the middle southbound lane at approximately 10:30a.m.
Ephlin was seriously injured in the crash and flown to Sarasota Memorial for treatment. Denning, sustained minor injuries and was taken to Venice Regional Medical Center. Police have charged Denning with driving on the wrong side of the road.
A motorcycle and SUV crashed in Venice at Bamboo Drive and Shamrock Boulevard resulting in the motorcyclist suffering severe injuries.
The crash happened when 39 year old motorcyclist Travis Garbrandt of Venice was approaching the intersection of Shamrock blvd., and Bamboo Dr., when a Buick Rendezvous SUV made a left turn causing the SUV to cross directly into the path of the oncoming motorcycle.
The motorcyclist had no time to avoid colliding with the SUV and crashed as the Buick cut across the intersection.
Garbrandt was taken to Sarasota Memorial Hospital where he is reported to be in critical condition.
Forty-eight year old Dana Wagner-Sacino was driving the SUV during the accident and has been cited by FHP troopers for failing to yield right of way. Police also stated that alcohol was not a factor in the crash.
Florida Highway Patrol announced a hit and run accident that took place Sunday evening on Venice Boulevard.
The incident happened shortly after 10:00p.m. when forty six year old Dawn Hinton from Venice was walking in near the 300 Block on Venice Blvd, when she was hit by a car.
The force of the collision tossed Hinton the roadway were she came to rest in a seated position. Fortunately Hinton’s injuries were minor and she received treatment at Bayfront Medical Center.
The car that struck Hinton did not stop and left no tire marks at the scene. No description of the vehicle is available.
A crash between two vehicles traveling in the northbound lanes on I-75 close to the River Road exit in Venice resulted in one death and two people injured.
The accident took place at roughly 10:20 a.m when sixty-two year old Alison Young driving a Ford Escape had been slowed or stopped from traffic further ahead.
A seventy-six year old woman from Ft. Myers was driving a 2004 Toyota was approaching the stopped traffic at speed and failed to slow down.
The Toyota slammed into the back of the Ford Escape violently and both vehicles were spun off the highway where they crashed into pine trees along the shoulder.
A passenger in the Toyota only identified as a sevety-seven year old male was killed in the crash. The woman driving the Toyota was taken to Venice Regional Hospital in critical condition.
Young, the driver of the Escape was seriously injured in the crash.
Police stated that no skid marks were found at the scene possibly indicating the Toyota did not slow at all before smashing into the Escape however an investigation was ongoing.
Florida Highway Patrol Reported a crash involving a motorcyclist and Ford pick up truck in Venice Friday.
The crash occurred at roughly 4:30 in the afternoon as Mallory Johnson, 27 of Venice was driving east on Shamrock Drive near Wisteria Road when a motorcyclist attempting to turn across the road drove directly in front of Johnson’s F-150 pick up.
The motorcyclist, Albert Chesbrough, 78 of Venice, was hit by the oncoming pickup as he rode his Honda V-twin across Shamrock from the west and turned without yielding to traffic.
Chesbrough, who was not wearing a helmet during the crash suffered severe injuries and was taken to Blake Medical Center in Bradenton for emergency treatment.
Chesbrough was cited by officers for failing to give right of way.
