59 school children riding a school bus en route to Virgil Mills Elementary School when it collided with a 2012 Ford focus. The accident occurred near the Buffalo Creek Golf Course on 69th Street East at Ellenton Florida.
The accident resulted in 8 students being injured with minor injures. Of the 8 injured students 7 were taken for treatment by Manatee County Emergency Medical Services to Manatee Memorial Hospital and one student was treated at Lakewood Ranch Medical Center.
The Virgil Mills Principal Mike Rio also stated that 17 other students were evaluated at the scene but deemed not in need of medical treatment.
The students injuries were categorized as minor bumps and bruises and all students in need were thoroughly evaluated by EMS.
A statement from the driver of the Ford Focus, Daniel Newcombe, 21, of Parrish, indicated mechanical trouble with the cars clutch prevented his car from being able to stop in time to avoid the collision even with the emergency brake applied.
Florida Highway Patrol gave the following account of the accident: Newcombe was heading South towards 69th Street East. The school bus was heading west on 69th Street East. The Focus failed to stop at the intersection and turned left into the oncoming school bus. The driver of the bus, Tyeise Davis Evans, of Palmetto tried to avoid the accident but there was not enough time.
The collision of the right front side of the bus spun the car clockwise onto the shoulder and into a ditch.
Florida Highway Patrol said the Newcombe, the driver of Focus passed a roadside test for alcohol and will be charged with failure to yield the right of way.
