The crash happened when Ralph Johnson Jr., a fifty five year old from Ellenton was driving a freight truck on 16th Avenue East in Palmetto when he approached a red light. Johnson chose to run the light and speed into the intersection.

At the same time a 2007 Toyota Camry being driven by Jessica Gonzalez, a twenty-six year old from Palmetto had the green light and proceeded into the intersection of 29th Street East and 16th Ave. East.

The right front of the fright truck smashed into the left front of the Toyota Camry. The force of the impact caused a five-year old passenger,  in the Camry to be thrown from the car through a side window on to the road as the car slid to a stop.

FHP troopers said Adam Aguilar, the boy who was ejected from the  car, had not been secured in a seat belt or car seat at the time of the crash. Aguilar was rushed to All Children’s Hospital in St. Petersburg for medical treatment.

Gonzalez, and another passenger in the Camry a seven year old, were also injured in the crash and taken to Manatee Memorial Hospital for treatment of minor injuries.

The driver of the freight truck was unharmed in the accident, FHP troopers cited Johnson for running the red light and Gonzalez was cited for having a child not properly restrained while driving.
