Bicyclist Killed By Car Strike In North Port

North Port police is investigating an apparent car vs bicycle crash that took the life of a 20 year old male Monday.

The fatal crash took place at roughly 9p.m. when 20 year-old cyclist Alonzo Cota-Alvarado was attempting to cross Tamiami trail near South Biscayne Drive when he was hit by a car.

The driver, 30 year old Shane Michael Kennedy, was heading north in a Chevy Impala sedan when he encountered Cota-Alvarado. Kennedy did not see the Bicyclist untill it was too late to avoid a collision.

Alonzo Cota-Alvarado was struck at speed, mortally wounding him. Cota-Alvarado was taken to Tampa General Hospital where he died from his injuries.

North Port Police are continuing to investigate the accident.
