Two From Sarasota Killed In Fiery Crash While Fleeing Sarasota Police
Florida Highway Patrol announced that two were killed in a crash after fleeing a traffic stop.
The crash happened after Sarasota Police attempted to stop the driver of a 2007 BMW 750Li at Washington Ct. and 24th St. in Sarasota. The BMW fled and because of danger to civilians the officers did not pursue.
After fleeing the Sarasota Police officers, the driver of the BMW continued at a high rate of speed heading west on University Parkway and attempted to turn right on to the northbound lanes of U.S. 301 but was going much too fast and failed to negotiate the turn. At roughly 2:30a.m. the speeding BMW crossed over the shoulder and high an embankment at the rail line causing the sedan to be launched into the air.
While airborne the BMW smashed into a railroad support pole and the crashed into another. After hitting the pole head-on the car came out of the air onto a metal guardrail in the median and burst into flames finally coming to a stop. Both driver and passenger were pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver of the car had a history of multiple traffic violations including fleeing officers and driving with a suspended license.
