Red-light Runner Injures Six In Bradenton Accident
An accident with serious injures was set in motion when a driver ran a red light in Bradenton.
Twenty-two year old Bradenton resident David Betancourt was eastbound on 51st Ave. East and heading toward the crossing with U.S. 301.
As Betancourt approached the intersection the traffic signal turned yellow, rather than slowing and stopping for the signal Betancourt proceeded into the intersection at speed, attempting to turn onto U.S. 301.
Prior to Betancourt entering the intersection the traffic signal turned red and the stopped traffic proceeded into the intersection. Among those drivers was 56 year old Rey Treharn who entered the intersection driving a Ford Ranger pick up truck.
Betancourt crashed into the small pickup truck as they both entered the intersection. Treharn was critically injured in the crash and was transported to Blake Medical center in Bradneton by first responders. Betancourt sustained minor injuries and was brought to Lakewood Ranch Medical Center. Four others were injured in the crash including three teenagers, fourteen year old Alan Betancourt who was seriously injured, fifteen year old Gabriela Beltran who sustained minor injuries, sixteen year old Miguel Beltran was critically injured, and an as of of yet unidentified 21 year old woman who was critically injured who was taken to Blake Medical Center.
Authorities have charged Betancourt with not having proof of insurance and running a red light.
