Fuel Tanker Truck Crash Kills Driver; Closes 75

Florida Highway Patrol announced a fatal truck accident on southbound I75 at North Port Friday night.

The crash occurred as a loaded fuel tanker was heading southbound on Interstate 75 near North Port. At approximately 11:00pm the truck began to swerve between the left and right lanes causing driver, sixty-eight year old George Ervin from Valrico Florida to lose control of the heavy truck.

The fully-loaded fuel tanker overturned onto the highway at speed resulting in the truck completely blocking the highway and fuel being spilled out onto the roadway.

Ervin was killed in the crash. The tanker, which had an 8,500 gallon capacity leaked fuel onto the highway forcing a prolonged clean up process that kept the southbound lanes of I-75 closed as crews worked to contain and remove the fuel spill.

Traffic had to be re-routed on secondary roads, and the highway was resurfaced before being reopened.
